Report of the Group Scout Leader 2015-16
2015-2016 has been yet another fantastic year full of successful outings in all sections.
During the summer we started one of our largest refurbishment projects to date. We replaced all the windows, insulated the roof and fitted a new internal false ceiling with new LED lighting system and completely emptied the loft and re insulated and fitted new flooring. A new fire safety system has been installed and state of the art alarm system, new doors to main hall front and stores. I would like to thank all those that gave up their time and skills to help with this mammoth project to enable it to run smoothly and be achieved in a timely fashion during your main holiday season. All these upgrades will not only help the leaders run even more efficient section evenings but will allow us to gain further lets and increase the revenue from them and our on-going lets. Which in turn will help support, innovate and greatly improve the wellbeing of both our young people and leaders. Please take a few minutes to look around you and take in the work that has been carried out. We still have a long way to go and will be carrying on with further projects throughout the year and calling on all of you to help where ever you are able, please make an effort to respond in our cry for help as no matter how much time you can spare it all makes a difference.
We have had some great young leaders helping within the group, Issy Stephenson, Amelie Hogan and Lewis Twine, helping in Beavers with my wife Christina. Within cubs we have Elana Solomon, William Stephenson and Tyler Smith, who all bring great enthusiasm with them and have great fun each week with the Cubs, and in Scouts we have Harry Chandler. All these young leaders bring a great infusion of fun and spirit to each section, we are very lucky to have them give up their free time to help with the group. But sadly (for us) Issy is off to University this year and will be greatly missed by all of us within the group – but I am reliably told she is going to try and get back to help for any major events we may have, we all wish her well!
2016 also saw our return Thriftwood Scout Camp Site for our yearly Family Group Camp – an excellent fun filled activity camp! We even had one of our young people who thought he could walk on water – but learnt very quickly in reality he couldn’t – very entertaining! In 2017 we are returning to Gilwell Scout Camp Site, the home of Scouting, which promises to be equally as good if not better than last year so please do join us – you certainly won’t regret it! But before then we have our annual indoor Winter Camp at PGL – a new venue this year with new activities – so book early to avoid disappointment!
Our usual well attended Firework and Disco Evening in late October 2015 was another fantastic event – well run by all. Many thanks to Iain, Karen and Alan Burley for laying on and executing the Fireworks, to Andy for his DJ skills and for organising the children’s show, and to all the Parents and Leaders who, yet again, gave many hours of their time to help fundraise and make this event possible. Unfortunately, Iain and Alan Burley who were responsible for ordering, preparing and organising the sequence and execution of the fireworks are retiring this year so I would like to thank them both for all their hard work over the years and for their greatly appreciated support. But do not despair, as we have had a new group of parents that have stepped forward and have been fully trained at Kimbolton fireworks annual training course this year, and who are now fully qualified and raring to put on their first display for you in November, which they assure me will be even more innovative and bigger than ever! So don’t miss it – look forward to seeing you all there!
I would like to thank my wife Christina who is not only the Beaver Leader, but works tirelessly behind the scenes laying on events successfully. Many hours are spent on paperwork and double/treble checking that things are done – not an easy task. All events are supported by our excellent Leadership Team without whom they would not be possible. They not only run the section nights but also do a huge amount of work behind the scenes, ie programming, organising events and camps, etc. This Group would not be where it is today without their dedication. I would like to say many thanks to all the Leaders and helpers who are all VOLUNTEERS and a lot of the time get very little recognition for what they do and of course no payment for all the many, many hours they put in to developing the Group and young people within it. I would like to end my report with a thank you to Karen Burley for getting us the Lotto funding money each year and for her continuing dedication to the group.
